You will be encouraged to play together as a group and the session is about having fun in an informal environment. We will cover easier beginners’ chords and eventually progress on to more complex chords and movable shapes. The course will lightly cover scales and explain where and how they can be put to use.

Course aim

To provide support and encouragement in getting a learner to play in a group situation and not in a back bedroom. Maybe even you’ll start singing along with the tunes.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers
  • This course is for students who attend a specific centre only. For more information please call 0300 303 3464
  • Prior attainment is necessary as you will be expected to be able to play and change between basic chords. You should own a guitar, an electronic tuner and a music stand is advisable. You will also need a ring binder or file for your handouts.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Play along in a group situation.
  • Sing along to a tune and keep time.
  • Play rhythms and keep the guitar in tune.
  • Have knowledge of scales and have an idea of where to apply them.
  • Be able to listen to a piece of popular guitar music and differentiate between the bass-lines, the lead guitar part and the rhythm.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time
  • Extra help can always be asked for but you must remember that playing an instrument requires many hours of practice. You get out what you put in! Progressing week by week the course will be tailored to the group as a whole and the needs of the individual learner. Assessment audial and visual.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • A guitar, tuner and music stand is advisable.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • Google, You tube guitar lessons and Ultimate guitar for resources to music.

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Join or form a band. Get involved in jam sessions and open mike nights!
