The social history of blue & white porcelain is fascinating from its origins in China to its arrival in Europe as luxury objects. We study the role of the East India Co. in importing porcelain and the rise of early English porcelain factories such as Chelsea, Worcester, Bristol etc. We will look at the status of blue & white porcelain from expensive luxury to everyday wares and the role of Yorkshire potteries in promoting their own versions of blue & white

Course aim

A working knowledge of the social history of blue & white porcelain from its origins in China, through its height of luxury in 18th C England to the present day ware

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the origin of porcelain and how the blue & white colour way was produced
  • List the principal English factories producing early blue & white in the 18th c
  • Explain the link of porcelain to the demand for tea drinking in the 17th & 18th c
  • Explain how the discovery of shipwrecked cargoes led to a surge in popularity in blue & white porcelain in the 20th c

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
