A flexible course to learn basic computer skills or build on computer skills already achieved, access the Internet safely, create email account and use email safely, build on skills using some of the applications within the Microsoft Office Suite to create, format and edit documents. There will be opportunity if required for anyone wanting to access the apps on own tablet or smart phone.

Course aim

The course is aimed for learners to gain skills using a computer (or own tablet/smart phone), access the Internet safely, use email and build on skills to level appropriate to each individual using some of the applications within Microsoft Office.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is for students who attend a specific centre only. For more information please call 0300 303 3464
  • This course is aimed mostly for people who are registered at the Acorn Centre but is open to others if given permission by the Acorn staff.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand how to gain access, use a computer and input information using the keyboard and mouse.
  • Access the Internet safely and securely to find specific information, refine how to search and understand safe sites when buying on-line.
  • Understand how to use Microsoft Word to create documents, use various formatting tools for different levels of editing documents and save files securely.
  • Understand how to use Microsoft Excel to create spreadsheets, perform simple calculations, edit, format and save a spreadsheet securely.
  • Understand how to create and use a web-mail account to send, receive and forward email messages. Also know how to edit and add file attachments to email messages.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • If learners have time, there will be an opportunity to borrow task sheets to continue their learning at home.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress
  • Learners are encouraged to fill in their learning outcomes form after each session.

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Learners may like to bring their own note book to record important points and any helpful notes.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
