This course will explore the lives and works of a wide range of women from different periods, and the representation of women in Art, from the Renaissance to the 20th century. Work by women artists will be considered within the wider cultural context and gender boundaries. Fully illustrated with discussion.
Course aim
To explore the work of a range of women artists from different periods, and the representation of women in Art, from the Renaissance to the 20th century.
Do I need any particular skills or experience?
- This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
By the end of the course I should be able to:
- Contribute to constructive discussion about the material studied
- View, analyse and discuss a wide range of examples of paintings
- Consider the wider context within which the works were produced, in terms of social, historical and genders issues
- Realise the significance of the works within the wider art historical context
- Understand the background of the artists studied
How will I be taught?
- The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
What kind of feedback can I expect?
- You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

- A notebook and pen may be useful for making notes.
