To take students on a journey through time to explore and compare life experiences of people living in different eras ,attempting to recreate history using arts and crafts and encouraging participation in a variety of activities. including quizzes, crosswords, word searches, relevant power point presentations and lots of group discussions. Eras studied include WW, Romans, Egyptians, Victorians, Tudors and many more. Also a possible planned historical visit to enforce learning and bring history to life!

Course aim

Encourage the understanding of a 'History time line' then choose different significant periods in History to explore, examine and compare aspects of life within those eras with our life today. Including the completion of a historic craft item.

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is for people with little spoken English
  • This course is open to Unison members only

  • A course for students at the Foresight Centre. There is no requirements for 'Discovering History' other than a willingness to learn and an interest in what life was like in times gone by!

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • To recognise important times in History
  • To discuss historic events from eras taught.
  • To answer questions correctly about historic events.
  • Participate in different activities and tasks related to historic events
  • Co operate collaboratively in recreating History through arts and crafts.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • - The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you andthe group to be actively involved in your learning - Also aspects of local History will be introduced where appropriate, with the option to take part in a related field trip if can be arranged.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress
  • The Students will all be given their own personal lever arch file in which to collect and present their work.There will be competitions and quizzes for which they will be awarded certificates and prizes throughout the course.

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • Additional expenses for trips hopefully to be covered. Students only requested to provide a small food contribution to the end of term party.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • No reading/preparation necessary, just simply an interest in History and a thirst to learn more.

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation

  • Hopefully for some students it will initiate a thirst for further knowledge of the eras covered, therefore encourage individual research and even further study or enrolment on an accredited History course.
