Inspired by Artists, Art Nouveau

This creative, practical course will take inspiration from a number of Art Nouveau artists and designers, including Tiffany, Aubrey Beardsley, Alphonse Mucha and William Morris. It will explore the wide variety of patterns and product designs produced during this inspiring art movement. Students will have the opportunity to create their very own Art Nouveau style flowing repeat patterns and a collection of nature inspired vase designs. Students will be free to work directly from images of pre-existing artworks or to create their own unique designs.

Course aim

This practical course will explore Art Nouveau artists and designers such as Tiffany, Aubrey Beardsley and Alphonse Mucha. Activities will include students creating flowing repeat patterns and a collection of nature inspired vase designs.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Recognise examples of art and design that originate from the Art Nouveau period.
  • Have a better understanding of repeat pattern and product design.
  • Take inspiration from images of pre-existing artworks and personalise them using a variety of creative techniques.
  • Work independently to produce new, original artwork that takes inspiration from Art Nouveau.
  • Produce a collection of Art Nouveau inspired repeat patterns and vase designs.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
