Creative Textiles

The course will introduce you to textiles as an art form. Taking an experimental approach to textiles, learners will gain a grounding in a range of creative techniques. They will have the chance to experiment with a variety of processes whilst working with both traditional and alternative materials.

Course aim

This course aims to use a range of textile processes and materials to explore the relationship between art and textiles.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate a form of hand stitch.
  • Explore ways of changing the textile surface.
  • Produce a variety of creative samples, showing a range of techniques.
  • Begin to combine learnt techniques to create a piece of work independently.
  • Gain textile knowledge and inspiration from a range of sources, including different cultures or contemporary practices.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • All materials will be provided, although stock is limited so students may wish to invest in extra equipment and materials during the course. In the past some students have brought a box or folder to keep their work in if they wish to take it to and from The Artworks.

  • You are aged 19 years or older on 1st September 2019
