Spend the morning making hearty nutritious soups. We will discuss the nutritional benefits of the different soups we make and discover exciting combinations of ingredients.Soups are easy to make and provide a delicious healthy meal all year round, especially in the chilly winter months. You will be able to identify vegetarian and vegan ingredients, along with other dietary requirements. We will examine shop bought stock cubes, and similar and discuss their ingredients and the benefits of making your own stock. You will be encouraged to make a soup of your choice and take some home, so please bring a suitable container. There will be time to discuss your favourite recipes.
Course aim
Learn how to make tasty nutritious soups using inexpensive everyday ingredients. Make your own soup and take a sample home!
Do I need any particular skills or experience?
- No skills or experience needed
- This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
By the end of the course I should be able to:
- State the nutritional value of 6 popular soup ingredients
- Identify 5 herbs or spices you could use in soups
- Make a soup of your choice
- Give 2 reasons why home made stock is nutritionally beneficial.
How will I be taught?
- The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
What kind of feedback can I expect?
- A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
- You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
- You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
- You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
What else do I need to know?
- All materials will be provided
- A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
- Please bring a container for your soup
Pre-course work, reading and information sources
- No pre reading or pre course work is required
- No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
What can I do next?
- Progress to another WEA course
- Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
- Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
