Unison: Working Lives - Starting a Family Tree

Students will start recording family history and be introduced to standard terms and methods used by family historians. This foundation will then provide a basis for further learning into methods and sources with a focus on employment and work.

Course aim

To introduce the basics of recording and researching family history.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is open to Unison members only

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • 1. describe the difference between Genealogy and Family History
  • 2. give reasons why researching family history can be a valuable activity
  • 3. draw a family tree using common symbols
  • 4. list the common sources of information used in family history research
  • 5. plan on what to do next and to progress your own research

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • • Please bring a pen or pencil and paper or notepad
