The Working Man's Palace - A Social History of Sheffield Pubs

The Working Man's Palace: A Social History of Sheffield Pubs is a newly established course. Using images, maps and documents of the period we will examine the origins, architecture and ownership of pubs and brewing in Sheffield, the impact of heavy industry on the way people drank and how pubs were used as public spaces, including the development of the temperance movement. Monday evenings 18.00-20.00 at The Circle, 33 Rockingham Ln, Sheffield S1 4FW for six weeks from from 6 January to 10 February 2020.

Course aim

To understand the social context and historical development of pubs, breweries and drinking culture in Sheffield over the last three hundred years

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand the chronology of Sheffield pubs and breweries over the last three centuries
  • Understand how key aspects of industrial and social change affected pubs in the city
  • Identify important people, events and movements in the history of Sheffield pubs
  • Locate key pubs in the history of the city, both current and vanished

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • A notebook or laptop to take notes would be useful if you wish to bring one
