This course is especially for those who wish to broaden their knowledge of painting practice and improve their painting technique. This term we will continue to explore figurative and representational subject matter as we did during the previous term and look at self portraiture. We will also develop knowledge of colour theory through tonal values in some detail. During the course there will be ample opportunity for students to discuss their progress with their tutor, as well as their peers, all in a welcoming and creative environment.

Course aim

This course is designed for those wishing to improve their painting practice through the achievement of studies and finished pieces.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of painting practice through studies and finished pieces
  • Establish knowledge of colour theory and mixing through studies of tonal values
  • Show a level of creativity through studies and finished pieces
  • Interact with other group members through discussion relating to painting practice

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • Students are encouraged to invest in their own materials especially painting supports i.e. paper, canvases, boards etc.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation

  • Students are encouraged to show their work in the Art House Summer Exhibition and will receive guidance regarding the presentation of their pieces. Showing work at the Art House can also lead to other exhibition opportunities and the sale of works.
