Creative Writing - This Midnight Moment's Forest

Ref: C3676967

An opportunity to read and re-examine favourite pieces of prose and poetry. An opportunity too, to be inspired by such texts and create personal responses in the form of discussion and creative writing. You will have a chance to assess how influential famous authors have been in your own development as a writer and how far you can use well-known texts to further your own progression.

Course aim

To allow for extended reading of exemplar texts and production of personal pieces of creative writing, poetry and prose, in response.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Read poems and prose passages with confidence.
  • Take part in group discussions about various poems and prose passages which have been read.
  • Make personal decisions about how effective you find various exemplar pieces of text to be.
  • Use texts encountered on the course as a basis for your own writing and the development of your writing.
  • Make decisions about your own responses both written and verbal and how they can be improved.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time
  • A willingness to pick up on recommendations for further reading made during the course will always be welcome, as will engagement in writing activities which go beyond the stipulated task.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A pen and a writing pad will be necessary. It will also be a good idea to organise your own writing portfolio of completed pieces of work with tutor comments and possibly the comments of your colleagues on the course added.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • It will be helpful for all participants on the course to have an outline idea of who their favourite poets and prose writers are. In addition, some awareness of their own standing as writers would be useful. How would you like to see your writing develop? Be prepared to share this information.
