Knitting and Crochet

For beginners to intermediate stage. This course will cover a wide variety of stiches and techniques such as mixed knit and pearl stitch, knit together, pearl together, increase and decrease in knitting and crochet, weaving, creating a knitting and crochet pattern, producing knitted and crochet cardigan parts. Learners will make knitted and crochet projects like hats, dresses, ponchos, baby booties and jumper etc. There will be choice for learners to choose knitting or crochet.They might be able to do both; it depends on learners' ability. The class environment will be friendly and supportive. Learners will have the chance to socialize with local community members and meet others with the same interests.

Course aim

To introduce knitting and crochet techniques and processes to make garments. To demonstrate various methods of creating patterns, shapes and producing woollen projects.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is for people with little spoken English

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Achieve a variety of knitting and crochet stitching techniques.
  • Develop confidence and increase speed.
  • Recognize knitting and crochet methods and processes in production of a project.
  • Make different sizes of garments from baby booties,baby mittens, baby cardigan and adult cardigan, shawl, poncho etc.
  • Complete some samples neatly.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Some wool, crochet hooks and knitting needles will be available in class. Learners may need to bring their own wool and/or other equipment and learners will take their finished projects home.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
