This course will include: taking body measurements, transferring measurements onto the fabric using mathematical skills, creating a pattern and stitching the garment. Students will develop skills that will enable them to consider other pathways and opportunities.

Course aim

To develop skills in sewing by using various strategies, techniques and methods and to inspire students to create unique garments. To build confidence and to become more independent in making your own garments.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is for women only as it is held in a women's centre

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Take body measurements confidently, independently, accurately and adapt body measurements to individual shapes and sizes.
  • Create patterns by applying the measurements taken and to develop understanding how free style patterns are created.
  • Use sewing machines, zipper foot, hem foot, button hole and other related sewing equipment, safely and effectively within health and safety guidelines.
  • To become confident and independent learners.
  • To develop creative and versatile designs to challenge the learning.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Students are expected to bring a sewing kit, consisting of tape measure, tailors chalk, pins, stitch opener, hand sewing needles, thread etc and provide your own material for your garment

  • You will have access to course resources and links to wider learning through the WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas: http://bit.ly/WEAonline
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
