This course will enable the learner to experiment with artistic media , pencil and charcoal to express issues related to portraiture and self image in today's Society.

Course aim

This 2 hour taster session will enable the learner to use different art media such as pencil and charcoal to express issues related to portraiture.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • No experience necessary but energy and enthusiasm a must!

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Used pencil to complete a portrait to express an issue related to the portrait/ self image.
  • Used charcoal to express an issue related to the portrait/self image.
  • Have an understanding of the proportion of the human head.
  • Have discussed and evaluated the work produced with the group.
  • Have displayed work if possible.

How will I be taught?

  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • Homework may be given at the end of the class.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • At the end of the session, learners will be able to discuss and evaluate the work produced.

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • Although there should be some materials provided , it may be a good idea to bring an A2 sketchbook and pencil.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • Students may want to research the different media used by artists to produce portraits.

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Students may want to access a 12 week course with the WEA as a result!
