The later Tudor and early Stuart periods in England where tumultuous times, not least of all in the north. But what were the issues faced by the later Stuart monarchs and how effectively did they deal with them? Come along to a relaxed 2 hour session to gain an insight into this neglected but fascinating period in English history with an emphasis on events in the north.

Course aim

To give an overview of the situation in England and especially the north of England in 1660 and a preview of what is to come in the reigns of the later Stuarts.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Have an overview of the political, social and religious situation in England and especially in the north in 1660.
  • Have an insight into the issues which would face the later Stuart monarchs and how these issues affected the people in the north.
  • Know a little of the leading people who would influence policy in the north at the time.
  • Understand how these issues would impact upon life in the country as a whole and the north in particular.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
