Celebration cake skills & wired sugar flowers

You will learn how cover a cake with sugarpaste and how to complete your cake to a professional standard. You will learn how to make a selection of wired sugar flowers and foliage, including orchids and ivy leaves. You will be shown how to use modelling tools to shape and give movement to petals and leaves and how to colour them realistically and arrange them into an attractive display, posy or cake top decoration . This course is suitable for beginners to acquire new skills and for more experienced students to enhance those they already have to a professional level. You will be coached and assisted to gain or improve techniques with the chance to ask questions and pick up tips. Learning takes place in a friendly supportive environment.

Course aim

You’ll will learn the skills that will give you the confidence to create your own sugar flowers and decorations to enhance your cakes and give them a professional finish. You will cover your own cake and decorate with sugarpaste and Royal icing

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • make orchids
  • make ivy leaves
  • Cover a cake with sugarpaste
  • arrange items into a cake top display
  • Finish a cake neatly

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • Students will need to have some tools and equipment for the course and bring a cake or cake dummy. Students will be making flowers for projects and therefore will need ingredients.
