Thinking For Yourself An Introduction to Philosophy

The modular sessions will be in the form of seminars, exploring historical and current philosophical issues through example, reference and a lot of discussion. This is a very interactive course.

Course aim

To introduce, and expand upon, some of the terminology and methodology utilised in the pursuit of philosophical investigation. To introduce various aspects of the world of Western philosophy To develop independent thinking

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • The course is for anyone with an open, enquiring mind

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand and articulate the principle that there are often no answers, only further questions.
  • Demonstrate the ability to employ and deploy those questions
  • Formulate such questions and arguments needed to live "the examined life (Socrates)"
  • Systematically and logically pursue my own interests and enthusiams

How will I be taught?

  • The main approach is as a seminar with much group discussion. Private, out of class exploration, is encouraged

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • All that is needed is an open, enquiring mind - although a notebook might be useful

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • Recommendations as to sources of information will be given as the course progresses according to the needs of the group and of individual students
