Jewellery Making using recycled and found materials

We will work with found materials that are able to be recycled or upcycled. Materials such as buttons, scrap fabric, washers, felt and anything you wish to bring to the class.

Course aim

Using old jewellery and lots of other materials to make new and interesting pieces of jewellery.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of how some everyday items can be recycled.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of colour and how colours work together.
  • Explore how items can be repurposed, and come up with ways to use them.
  • use equipment safely and with some accuracy.
  • look at different types of fastening, to make your products secure.

How will I be taught?

  • You will be asked to collect materials that can be used in the projects.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
