Ref: C3676639

This fun and friendly course will explore writing around a theme as well as learning about novella in flash and writing a poem for National Poetry Day. This group will meet fortnightly with the tutor and will self-manage on non-tutored weeks. So, whether you are a secret scribbler or a wannabe prize winner, come along and enjoy writing with a group of enthusiastic fellow writers.

Course aim

To write poetry, memoir and fiction within a supportive and experienced group of like-minded people.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Write a poem for National Poetry Day.
  • Write memoir/poetry/fiction inspired by the theme of clothing.
  • Construct at least one chapter for a novella in flash.
  • Develop critiquing and appreciation skills to apply to your own work and that of your fellow writers.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • Homework tasks are set each week and, while this is optional, learners will get the most out of the course if they complete it.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • You are encouraged to share your work for appreciation with the group in a weekly reading session. If a copy is supplied the tutor will annotate with written feedback.

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Please bring a pen and paper to each session. Laptops and/or tablets can be used but are not necessary. A ring binder, file or folder is useful to keep classwork, homework, handouts well-organised and to provide a record of your progress and achievement.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • Tutor will provide handouts as needed and may make reference to texts/websites for additional research and reading.

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • You could progress to Higher Education courses. Follow link to the PEARL website for information
  • Students on previous courses have taken part in open mics, submitted work for publication and competitions and self published.
