Learn about female specific cancers and screening programmes available such as breast mammograms. Be knowledgeable about how the menopause can affect you and how you can manage some of the misery of menopause to make it a more positive experience. Learn about mild depression and anxiety and how to positively manage this yourself. Be empowered to take care of your health and be happy and well.

Course aim

Provide information and increase awareness about women's health matters to empower women to be able to make informed choices about basic effective life style adjustments that can contribute to improving their long term health.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • a basic understanding of English is required. This course would also be suitable to anyone considering working in health care or considering progressing to nurse training.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand about heart disease and how to reduce my risk of developing heart disease
  • Understand about the causes of a stroke and the risk factors associated with having a stroke
  • Understand how to reduce my risk of developing cancer and be aware of the early warning signs of cancer
  • Have knowledge of how the menopause can affect women and how to manage this well
  • Understand more about mild depression and anxiety and how to self manage to promote good mental wellbeing

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
