This is a project about place; students will have the opportunity to explore & look at the immediate area around HFT, the grounds & nearby streets. They will record what they discover using drawing &/or digital photography. Students will use these as inspiration for their own textile work based on what they have seen & chosen to record. They will be supported to produce a 2D or 3D textile renditions using a range of hand & machine stitch work & will be encouraged to look for found objects that can be incorporated in their work. Individual textile work will be assembled into a group artwork that gives a sense of their surroundings as well as highlighting individual features that have attracted them.

Course aim

This course will give students the opportunity to explore, discover & record some of the natural & urban features in the area immediately around HFT Learning Zone with the intention of producing a textile work for display at HFT.

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Practice a range of different hand & machine textile processes.
  • Discovered how to use colour, stitchwork and texture to add interest to my textile piece.
  • Keep a record of my work using words and/or pictures to help me remember the different textile processes I have used.
  • Gain an appreciation of some of the natural & urban features in the area immediately around HFT Learning Zone

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
