Play Guitar

Ref: C3676577

You will be encouraged to play together as a group and the session is about having fun in an informal environment. We will cover easier beginners’ chords and eventually progress on to barre chords and their move-able shapes. The course will covers scales and explain where and how they can be put to use. Hybrid chords / scale based chords will also be covered.

Course aim

To provide support and encouragement in getting a learner to play in a group situation and not in a back bedroom. Maybe even you’ll start singing along with the tunes. We aim to cover at first about nine chords and improvisation is encouraged.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers
  • Any prior knowledge or entry requirements? You just need to own a guitar and be able to play simple chords. If you can sing then all the better. If not then just come along and play!

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Play along in a group situation and maybe take part in an open mic night.
  • Sing along to a tune and keep time.
  • Play simple rhythms and keep the guitar in tune.
  • Have knowledge of scales and have an idea of where to apply them.
  • Be able to listen to a piece of popular guitar music and differentiate between the bass-lines, the lead guitar part and the rhythm.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • Learners are encouraged to bring along their own handouts and if it is possible to play them then the group will cover them but don’t forget you may be leading the session!

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • Extra help can always be asked for but you must remember that playing an instrument requires many hours of practice. You get out what you put in! Progressing week by week the course will be tailored to the group as a whole and the needs of the individual learner. Assessment is by tutor using audio

What else do I need to know?

  • You will also need access to the internet outside of your sessions. You could do this using a smart phone, tablet, laptop or a desktop computer (at home or through a library etc.).
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Any prior knowledge or entry requirements? You just need to own a guitar and be able to play simple chords. If you can sing then all the better. If not then just come along and play! An electric tuner and music stand would be of benefit.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • Web - Tabcrawler, Tab Robot, Chordie.com Youtube – online guitar lessons

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • This course could lead to a range of job opportunities. Follow link to National Careers Service for more details https://nationalcareersservice.direct.gov.uk/
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Suggestions for progression to further study or for using the skills and knowledge gained: Join or form a band - go along to a jam session and join in!
