To develop and improve ICT skills in relation to employability and JCP job search requirements. This course will help students to access the JCP Find a job & job search website; write or update a CV and a cover letter; filter job searches; upload and attach documents to a job application and apply for jobs online. It will also provide the opportunity to upskill in basic computing skills and to use mobile digital solutions.

Course aim

To develop and improve ICT skills in relation to employability and JCP job search requirements.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is for jobseekers referred by JCP or voluntary attendance for upskilling in preparation for gaining employment.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Create or access accounts for email and job related websites eg: gov.uk/findajob. Register for and access alternative sites to maximise opportunities for employment.
  • Develop and improve internet skills for employability. For example: Use of online maps & travel websites to enable travel to the workplace or to interviews and training courses. Improve knowledge of job interview skills and requirements through online research and sharing information with peers on the course.
  • Develop and Improve typing skills: Accuracy Speed Dexterity
  • Browse and search for employment opportunities on the internet. Narrow the search to specific occupations or locations. Identify and discuss alternative sources of information for jobs or volunteering opportunities. Participate in impromptu Q&A or discussion related to job search. e.g: The word on the street, local news, social media, Word of mouth.
  • Create and upload/download and attach supporting documents to a job application. Record job search activities in an online journal or alternative means of recording in accordance with JCP requirements.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • You will also need access to the internet outside of your sessions. You could do this using a smart phone, tablet, laptop or a desktop computer (at home or through a library etc.).
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • You will need to bring your own pens, a notepad or other means of recording your work. e.g: Notes on a tablet, smartphone or google account.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • As advised by JCP upon referral.
