History and Landscapes of the Loxley Valley

Building on the recent WEA Know Your Sheffield local history course this dayschool will suit people wanting to know more about the history and landscapes of the Loxley Valley. We will use images, maps and documents of the period to look at the people, industry, events and places associated with the Loxley Valley. Saturday 10 August 11.30-5pm. We will meet at the Nags Head, Stacey Bank, Sheffield, S6 6SJ for an introductory lecture - followed by a four mile walk. Return by bus from Malin Bridge to Nags Head. Parking available at the Nag's Head pub and nearby. Please bring a packed lunch.

Course aim

Student will discover more about the history and landscapes of the Loxley Valley through the use of images, maps and documents, and on a guided walk

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand key aspects of Loxley local history including industry and enclosure, the 1864 Sheffield Flood, Little Matlock and the area as a tourist destination
  • Identify some key historical features and buildings associated with Loxley
  • Identify a range of people who influenced the development of Loxley in this period

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • A notebook would be useful if you wish to take notes or sketches on the walk Please bring a packed lunch on the day
