This is an opportunity to learn a variety of practical painting and drawing techniques using a range of materials in a relaxing and welcoming environment. Students can look forward to a range of topics including Cubism and Symbolism, as well as exploring different media such as oil pastels, soft pastels and mixed media. This course is ideal for those looking for inspiration for their art as well as those who wish to find a starting point to be creative. During the course there will be chance to try out different methods for creating art and opportunity to learn about different artists.

Course aim

This course is for those wishing to learn various practical painting and drawing techniques and for students who also wish to brush up on skills and broaden knowledge for creating works of art.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of different painting and drawing materials in order to produce studies and finished pieces
  • Develop ideas for creating works of art through learning about different artists and their work
  • Show a level of creativity through works of art
  • Engage in discussion with other group members in relation to art

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • Provided materials are very limited therefore students are encouraged to mostly provide their own, especially paper, boards and canvases where necessary

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
