Spanish for Beginners

Learn a new skill. Come and learn the basics of the Spanish language and culture: for pleasure, for work, to help your children or for your own health and wellbeing. Understand and use key phrases when meeting people, introducing yourself and others. Learn some useful vocabulary and expressions to find your way around, to say what you need/want when ordering drinks/snacks or shopping for food and start getting familiar with numbers. Develop your confidence practising your speaking skills in a friendly and supportive atmosphere.

Course aim

To introduce students to the basics of the Spanish language and culture when dealing with personal information, finding their way around and ordering some drinks/snacks or buying food.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand and use basic greetings, polite expressions, ask for repetition, etc.
  • Understand and answer basic questions about you: name, nationality, occupation, age, address, telephone number.
  • Introduce yourself and others ( family members, friends).
  • Order drinks and snacks, and saying what you need/ want when buying food, and ask for the bill/understand prices.
  • Understand and use basic expressions to find your way around: ask questions such as Is there a bank near here?, Where is it?, be able to understand instructions.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • You need to bring: a notebook and a pen. It can be useful to have a file to keep some handouts/exercise papers. The tutor will give you information on some books, dictionaries and other resources that can support your learning, and suggest how to use any resources you may already have.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • You can visit BBC languages
