Drama for the Terrified

This course is designed to introduce newcomers to the skills of acting. If you have ever wondered what it might be like to prepare for a play then come along and enjoy simple games, exercises, improvisations and text work which will provide you with a taste of the real thing.

Course aim

To introduce students to aspects of theatrical performance with a view to acting in plays. To give students self-confidence through physical exercises and co-operating with each other.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Perform physical exercises required as warm-up procedure
  • Develop voice projection
  • Identify trust in both yourself and others by performing simple trust exercises
  • Demonstrate improvisational skills developed through exercises
  • Translate a piece of written text into a Drama performance

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided
  • Learners should wear comfortable clothing and comfortable shoes

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
