The course will provide a broad understanding of French life based around themed topic areas from the course book and other relevant sources. Emphasis is placed on developing speaking and listening skills and also confidence building within these areas. Grammar and its structures are introduced where appropriate and necessary.

Course aim

To develop a good and broad based knowledge of the French language and culture to a GCE/GCSE level using themed topic areas from the course book.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers
  • No certificated requirements are requested for admission to this progressive course. It is primarily aimed at existing students who have already completed previous levels of the course and wish to continue their progression to a higher level. However, other suitably qualified students may apply.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • have learned how to express that I am fed up with or that I have had enough of certain situations and the vocabulary and grammatical structures associated with them.
  • have learned how to express outrage under certain conditions.
  • have learned how French people are advised to deal with noise pollution and the practical vocabulary to cope with it.
  • have learned how the use of household equipment and road machinery can cause noise pollution and how it can affect my hearing.
  • have consolidated my understanding of spoken French numbers across a varied range of situations. I will also have consolidated my understanding of written and spoken French weather forecasts.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Essential course book: Breakthrough French 3 published by Palgrave Macmillan. Essential course grammar book: La Grammaire en Clair - contact the course tutor re availability.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • Students will have a good working knowledge of the language to about GCE/GCSE level or will be students already on this progressive course.
