Exploring Printmaking Techniques

Mono-printing with foliage and texture, making a printed concertina or a bi-fold book, reduction lino printing, single colour lino printing, and collagraphs, using nature as our inspiration we will produce a series of prints using a variety of processes, during which we will learn about image transfer, and registration for printmaking, as well as the intuitive methodology of mono-printing. All of these processes can easily be utilised to make gifts, cards and the like. Advice will be given as to how this can be achieved.

Course aim

The course aim is to open up the process of printing to those who have no specialist equipment but would love to explore the world of printmaking.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • select appropriate materials to use for mono-printing from nature
  • construct a concertina and bi-fold book
  • make a basic single colour lino print
  • make a multi colour mono-print from nature

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • your own research is always useful to enable deeper discussion around identity and self. looking at contemporary portraiture and having a pinterest account will be useful to save your images to

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • A sketch book for your own ideas and research

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • You may want to collect and press some of your own foliage in readiness for mono-printing. You may want to look at images pertaining to lino printing to see the type of imagery suitable for the process
