Practical Parent Helpers

This course is for parents who would like to support their own children's learning, who would like to volunteer in school and progress onto the accredited Teaching Assistant course, with a view to working in schools. We will cover the basics of the current Primary Curriculum, including; Maths, English, Science and PSHE, The course consists of 7 sessions, during which students will explore a range of practical activities they can use to help support children's learning in the above areas In addition, participants will also have the option to explore in depth a different aspect of the school curriculum, such as ICT, PSHCE etc, or to benefit from the input of a visiting speaker. Students will be encouraged to put into practice their ideas for supporting children's development and learning both at home and (possibly) as volunteers within a school.

Course aim

To help parents understand the skills required by children to enable them to access the primary curriculum, leading to the parents becoming confident and competent volunteers in the primary classroom.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • List 3 practical strategies to support children's development in English.
  • Identify 3 ways children can develop their learning through play.
  • List 3 practical strategies to support children's development in maths
  • List 3 practical strategies to support children's development in science.
  • List 3 practical strategies for encouraging children's social, emotional and behavioural development.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
