This course will describe the Anglo-Saxon settlement of Northumbria, its culture, coinage, church history, art & architecture. Using archaeology, air photography, history and manuscripts to show what it was, how long it lasted, what it achieved and what happened to it. Northumbria was one of the most important Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, crucial to the formation of England and will be examined in depth.

Course aim

This course will introduce students to the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Northumbria, what & where is it? how long did it last? what did it achieve and what are its lasting effects today?

  • This course is for adults who would like to find out more about the past, in this case about the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Northumbria in which Beverley lay.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Show what, where and how long the kingdom of Northumbria was.
  • Describe the lasting cultural achievements of the Kingdom.
  • List the principal ecclesiastical sites of the kingdom.
  • Outline the architecture of a typical Anglo-Saxon villages buildings.
  • Show what happened to Anglo-Saxon Northumbria.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Provided as a friendly, informal, slide illustrated, lecture based class,with ample opportunity for class discussions.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?
