Sewing Masterclass Series - Back to Basics

You will explore the basics of sewing. You will be introduced to sewing machine, overlocker, irons and sewing kit. You will complete a folder of basic sewing techniques which you can use as a reference folder for future courses. You will NOT complete a finished sewn product and you will not need any materials. Please do not bring your own sewing project along.

Course aim

This course is aimed at beginners, you will complete a folder of sewing techniques only - not a finished product. You will be introduced to the sewing machine, basic sewing kit, irons and several basic sewing techniques.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Setup the sewing machine, wind a bobbin, safely control the sewing machine, start and finish stitch sample with a backstitch, recognise what seam allowance is for, straight stitch sample, use iron safely
  • Introduction to overlocker, use overlocker safely, plain seam overlocked finish, french seam, identify what the seam techniques would be used for
  • Overlock and topstitch hem, rolled edge stitch, satin bound seam, identify what the hem techniques would be used for
  • Inner construction techniques - clipping, notching and corners, identify what the inner construction techniques would be used for
  • Combine techniques, review techniques of the course and talk about next steps

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
