Each week we explore the key features of a city, it's culture and history including, Helsinki: culture and nation building, Berlin and the Cold War, Copenhagen: Imperial City, Amsterdam: the Golden Age and Tulipmania, London’s Victorian Underworld, Derry/Londonderry: Divided City, Paris in the 1920’s, Barcelona: City Under Siege, Rome: architecture of the Fascist era, Trieste: Memories of conflict and Empires

Course aim

A personal introduction to the history and culture of 10 cities of Western Europe with particular themes for each city.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Reflect in more depth on European culture and History
  • Critical assess the meaning of texts and images
  • Understand in more detail, the influences that developed and contributed to the presentation of different cities

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Students are encouraged to borrow dvd's and books to enhance their knowledge and to pursue independent research

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • An open mind and a sense of fun

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Students will increase their learning skills and confidence in a supportive a unwelcoming atmosphere.
