A course for anyone who enjoys singing in a group (or would like to try it for the first time!). Have fun and make friends while singing a wide range of songs, including gospel, world, folk and pop.

Course aim

To develop a cohesive group of singers whilst working on choral skills such as listening, breathing, pitching etc., but mostly to have fun!

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Warm up my body and voice safely for singing
  • Sing a new song from memory
  • Hold my own part in a group/pair/individually (depending on starting point)
  • Demonstrate improved ability to follow a conductor
  • Explain the background (historical/social etc.) to one of the songs

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • It may sometimes be helpful (and fun!) to listen to and/or practise songs at home during the week.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • Feedback will usually be immediate and verbal, tending to focus on the whole group, or sections of voices. If individual feedback is appropriate to helping progression it will be given privately and sensitively.

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided
  • All music will be provided. It is a good idea to bring a bottle of water and a pencil.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • As York Voices is a community choir many students re-enrol to continue singing. If, after the course, students are looking for a local choir with a different focus (e.g. formal performances, classical music) the tutor can provide information.
