This is a basic jewellery course for absolute beginners. Most of the class work will be practical. Topics will include the safe use of tools and material, handling different material confidently - such as beads, glue, paper, thread, metal wires and fire line. Learners will make a beaded bracelet, earrings and decorate a jewellery box as well as complete other projects that are complementary. Learners can take home their finished projects.

Course aim
To introduce the basic techniques and the processes of producing jewellery with beads, wires and thread. To build creativity with the use of a range of additional materials including paint, boxes, beads, wires, paper, clay and jewellery findings.

By the end of the course I should be able to:
- Use jewellery-making material safely.
- Accurately follow written and verbal instructions.
- Perform practical work and projects.
- Be familiar with the methods and processes of making jewellery pieces.
- Complete some jewellery pieces to wear.
How will I be taught?
- The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
- You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
- You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time
- The course will be taught through practical tutorials, diagrams and instructions. Learners will be encouraged to make notes.
What kind of feedback can I expect?
- A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
- You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
- You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
- You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
- A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
- There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress
- The class environment will be friendly and support will be provided through all the course. The practical work will be assessed in every session and feed back will be provided individually and to the whole class.
What else do I need to know?
- Nothing else is needed
- All materials will be provided
- A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
- It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
- If learners want to take home their finished projects a one-off voluntary contribution of £5 will be required (collected on the first session).

- No pre reading or pre course work is required
- No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
