Everyday Greek

This course is designed to help you develop further your basic speaking and listening skills in Greek. It will also to help you learn to read and write simple words and phrases in Greek, such as items on a menu and sentences about yourself. You will also gain an insight into the Greek lifestyle and culture. In a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, you will be introduced to some simple everyday language and you will have plenty of opportunity to practise key words and phrases in a fun and enjoyable way through a variety of activities (including pictures, games and roleplays). You will also learn about some Greek customs and traditions. Topics include speaking about yourself and your family and ordering a meal at a taverna. Handouts will be given out to help you revise at home what you learn in class.

Course aim

To expland your previous knowledge of Greek with some more simple everyday language you need for a visit to Greece / Cyprus and to give you an insight into the Greek lifestyle and culture.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers
  • Some prior knowledge of Greek is required. Ideally, you need to have attended at least two of the Greek courses offered in the previous year or something equivalent in the past. If you are a complete beginner please ring WEA on 0300 303 3464 and ask to speak to the tutor.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Write and spell my name in Greek.
  • Ask about and give basic information about myself and my family.
  • Order a meal at a taverna and ask for the bill.
  • Ask others what their free time activities or hobbies are and say what my free time activities and hobbies are.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will regularly receive informal feedback at various points during the course to help you progress.

What else do I need to know?

  • Please bring a pen or pencil, a notepad and a ring-binder or folder to keep your work in. You may need to buy a book and relevant CDs that cost £16. This will be discussed at the start of the course.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA Greek language course starting after Christmas that will build on the knowledge you acquire on this course.

  • You are aged 19 years or older on 1st September 2019
