French Beginners

Learn a new skill. Come and learn the basics of the French language and culture: for pleasure, for work, to help your children or for your own health and well-being. Understand and use key phrases when meeting people and introducing yourself. Start getting familiar with the alphabet and numbers. Learn some useful vocabulary and expressions to be able to order food and drinks and to find your way around, and to buy food and specify quantities. Develop your confidence practising your speaking skills in a friendly and supportive atmosphere.

Course aim

To introduce students to the basics of the French language and culture with regard to introducing themselves, ordering food and drinks, finding their way around, buying food and specifying quantities.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Introduce myself and be able to answer questions related to personal details (name, nationality, birthday, occupation, telephone number).
  • Use numbers 0-100 with confidence.
  • Say what I want when ordering food and drinks in a cafe or restaurant.
  • Understand and use the names for public places and shops, ask how to get there and follow the instructions.
  • Buy food or other items and specify amount of required item/s.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • A notebook and pen. The tutor will give you information on some books, dictionaries and other resources that can support your learning.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

  • You are paying the standard fee (with a credit or debit card) or you are on any of the qualifying benefits
  • You have a valid email address so that you can receive confirmation of your booking
  • You have been resident in the UK, EU or EEA for the last 3 years
  • You are aged 19 years or older on 1st September 2019
  • You have read and accept our standard terms and conditions
