Yoga improves your flexibility and strength. Movement is coordinated with breathing enabling you to gain a sense of calm and equilibrium. All classes focus on a range of exercises to ease stiffness in the joints, gentle stretches to encourage flexibility, a range of postures that improve both strength and flexibility, breathing practices that encourage a sense of calm and a deep relaxation. All practices can be adapted to suit your individual needs, yoga is a non- competitive practice - everyone is welcome.

Course aim

This course will focus on easing stiffness and encouraging upliftment through dynamic sequences. It will also focus on pelvic tilting, buttock strengthening and hamstring flexibility which contribute to pelvic stability and a healthy lower back.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Ease stiffness, improve flexibility and boost energy levels through practising a range of sequences linking breath and movement.
  • Promote gentle abdominal strengthening through the practice of pelvic lilts: standing, supine, kneeling and/or seated.
  • Practice a range of exercises that strengthen the buttocks including prone leg lifts and the Bridge.
  • Demonstrate improved hamstring flexibility through simple stretches and the practice of Forward Bends and The Downward Dog Pose.
  • Practice Yoga Nyasa, directing the breath to encourage deep relaxation

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • Demonstration and Instruction will be provided. Individual support will be provided.

What else do I need to know?

  • Please bring a Yoga mat, Block( if you have one) and a small blanket for your relaxation.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation

As a registered charity, and to meet our funders’ requirements, we need to check a few things with you before you book. Please could we ask that you check the list below to ensure you meet our basic criteria:

  • You are paying the standard fee (with a credit or debit card) or you are on any of the qualifying benefits
  • You have a valid email address so that you can receive confirmation of your booking
  • You have been resident in the UK, EU or EEA for the last 3 years
  • You are aged 19 years or older on 1st September 2019
  • You have read and accept our standard terms and conditions
