Historic Landscapes Survey 4 Processing and Interpreting Results

We will process and analyse survey data to prepare an archive and report on part of the historic landscape of Kilnsey, North Yorkshire. This will include looking at how to process geophysical survey data and integrate earthwork surveys and LiDAR data, and the course will provide a basic introduction to using online resources and open-source software. Students will be able to take part in a range of activities to try out new techniques and develop existing skills, leading to a greater understanding of the rich landscape heritage of Upper Wharfedale.

Course aim

The course will introduce a range of techniques for processing and analysing archaeological survey data, and for preparing results for archiving and publication.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Organise and catalogue a project archive.
  • Understand what is required for a project report and publication.
  • Demonstrate a basic knowledge of techniques for processing survey data.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
