This course is fully online accessing the course through Canvas our virtual learning environment and zoom, a video conferencing software. You will need reliable internet connection and internet-linked device with camera and microphone. We will email you links to canvas, please accept these to access the course, the sender will show as “instructure”. What makes up the decoration on Ancient Egyptian tomb walls? This course will introduce New Kingdom case studies such as the tombs of Paheri and Rekhmire discussing and explaining the tomb scenes painted or carved on the walls. We will study both so-called 'daily life' scenes as well as depictions of the funeral ritual and the duties in life of the deceased and seek to discern the meaning of these scenes and understand why the deceased chose to include such representations.

Course aim

To introduce to private (non-pharaonic) tombs from the Ancient Egyptian New Kingdom with an emphasis on case studies of wall relief art.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • You will need your own personal email address so that you’re able to login to the WEA’s digital learning platform: WEA Canvas.   • This course is for a group of around 15 students studying in a live video-learning platform conference and an online digital learning environment platform from the comfort of your own home.
  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • List five different scenes from New Kingdom tombs
  • Discuss a scene from the tomb of Paheri
  • Describe an example of a scene from the tomb of Rekhmire
  • Debate the choice of scenes of tomb owners such as Paheri and Rekhmire

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas will be used to provide resources or to support lessons, enable assessment, provide learner feedback and for other activities for individuals away from the course.   • Tutor Presentation supported by ongoing discussion using the mic/video and chat functions of zoom

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • Informal feedback. Anonymous short zoom quizzes will be used at the start of weeks 2-5. There will be an opportunity to participate in a discussion on canvas which the tutor will monitor and feedback on.

  • No requirement for additional work outside class but anything that can be done will be helpful.
