Communicating Online

Are you stuck in lockdown having problems with communicating online? Do you need to phone the supermarket about your late food delivery? Or do you need to send an email to complain about a missing refund? This course will look at language for these kinds of situations and help you practise. We will cover phoning, emailing, and vocabulary for online shopping.

Course aim

By the end of the course you will be better able to understand and produce texts used to deal with customer service by emailing or phoning to handle a problem you may have.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This is a live lecture delivered by a subject specialist in an online webinar video learning platform. You will need to be able to access the internet on a device with speakers or earphones. By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand and write an email to customer service.
  • Learn to phone customer services about a problem.
  • Learn and use vocabulary for shopping online.
  • Discuss communication barriers with peers.

How will I be taught?

  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • Zoom sessions with homework after.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress
  • You will get feedback after speaking in class time. You will get feedback about your writing from your tutor.

What else do I need to know?

  • You will need a notebook, or some paper, to write on and a pen.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • If you already have an email that you can't understand, you can bring it. The teacher can help you with it.

This course is funded by the West of England Combined Authority but is also open to residents of other areas.

As a registered charity, and to meet our funders’ requirements, we need to check a few things with you before you book. Please could we ask that you check the list below to ensure you meet our basic criteria:

  • You are paying the standard fee (with a credit or debit card) or you are on any of the qualifying benefits

  • You have been resident in the UK, EU or EEA for the last 3 years
  • You are aged 19 years or older on 1st September 2019
