Whether you want to brush up on your sewing skills or start from scratch, get creative with this group and work on making a book bag for college using both hand and machine sewing. You will be taught some sewing techniques and learn how to use a sewing machine confidently. You will also be able cut out a pattern and make the bag to take home.

Course aim

To provide an introduction to sewing and learn some new techniques as well as how to use a sewing machine. The main aim for this course is to get the first foundation in sewing and to have a bag for college that you have made.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • learn to make your own pattern
  • learn some hand sewing stitches
  • learn to use the sewing machine
  • learn to lay out and cut fabric properly
  • take home and use your bag

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • you can use the techniques taught in the class to make your own projects at home and repair and alter you own clothes.
