This taster course is designed to explore and have a deeper understanding of the lifestyle changes, practical financial and emotional, which may be associated with moving into and at retirement. It is designed to enable students to explore what their lives may look like in retirement by a mixture of informative presentation and interactive exercises. The students will look at practical changes in lifestyle, difference in income and budgeting, pensions freedoms legislation, and explore what other opportunities may be available by way of volunteering or alternative employment.

Course aim

To provide an introduction to the basic concept of retirement. To provide information and guidance on the financial and emotional well-being aspects of retirement.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • Students need a Level 1 qualification in English to join this course

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Have a basic understanding of what the practical changes in retirement may look like from both a personal and family viewpoint.
  • Have an understanding as to what my changes in income and expenditure may look like in retirement and how to budget effectively.
  • Gain an understanding of how my emotional lifestyle may change in retirement with regards to relationships, occupational work e.g. volunteering and general lifestyle changes.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Smartphones with calculators would be useful.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

This course is funded by the West of England Combined Authority but is also open to residents of other areas.

  • You are aged 19 years or older on 1st September 2019
