Pevsner Perambulation/Walk - Saltash (circa 1620)

Ref: C3531149

A walk and visits with a Tudor and Stuart focus as part of the Plymouth History Festival to help contextualise the Mayflower 400th celebrations. Pevsner will be our starting point for the old waterfront, Mary Newman's Cottage and St Nicholas Church. We meet at the late 16th century Boatman Inn, now renamed the Just Be Coffee Wine Lounge.

Course aim

This guided history walk follows in the footsteps of Pevsner and will try and recreate the medieval, Tudor and 17C town he saw in 1951, before slum clearances took their toll.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • As we will be visiting heritage sites including Mary Newman's Cottage and the church of St Nicholas and St Faith there will be less walking than last time, but an ability to walk up steep hills is required.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Distinguish buildings of different periods more easily.
  • Use historic photographs effectively in reconstructing lost streets.
  • Learn two or three architectural terms and apply this knowledge to describing a building.

How will I be taught?

  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Wet weather gear, notebook and pen or pencil, smart phone, camera etc

Pre-course work, reading and information sources
