Creative Writing: Shaping Stories

Suitable for beginners and those wishing to develop their skills further. The course will begin with a series of starter exercises designed to create a friendly and positive group environment. The following sessions will include guided exercises that encourage experimentation in form and style. The emphasis is on enjoyment and finding and developing your 'writing voice'. There will be optional homework tasks, and regular opportunities to discuss writing theory. Sessions will also include information and advice about competitions and other submission opportunities.

Course aim

To provide an opportunity to explore key story skills and techniques, through a range of creative exercises for fiction and memoir.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • outline an idea for a piece of written work
  • write an imaginative dialogue between two characters
  • Discuss how plot works in novels and/or short story, and identify ways you might apply that structure to your own writing

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time
  • There will be a writing assignment set as an optional homework-task at each session.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Please bring your preferred writing materials: notebook/paper and pen/pencils.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
