Converse in French in small groups. Use pictures/postcards to describe scenes and to make comments. Compare/contrast two pictures orally. Read French articles to develop a knowledge of current French life and people's opinions. Work on exercises in French grammar and explanations. Solve word games with partner or individually. Listen to each other speak French and also to French speakers in short video clips

Course aim

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers
  • This course is for all students who wish to improve and extend their knowledge of French both spoken and written. A good basic knowledge of French required and a willingness to converse with others in class is helpful.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Read aloud in French with greater clarity and confidence (Read French)
  • Initiate and participate in conversation in French with increased confidence (Speak French)
  • Practise writing in French researching vocabulary and using varied tenses (Write in French)
  • Listen to French spoken at native speed and answer related questions. Improve aural comprehension. (Listen)
  • Participate in conversation. Create short descriptions and share with group. Solve vocabulary building puzzles/exercises (Speak and Write)

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be given an article to read in preparation for the following lesson. This will aid comprehension in class. You may be encouraged to complete a written homework task during the term.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • Written homework will be marked with comments for improvement

What else do I need to know?

  • Please bring the following to lessons: A good dictionary e.g. Collins or your device e.g. tablet for checking vocabulary A4 loose leaf folder and plastic wallets to hold handouts, class work and homework. File paper, pens Verb tables
