Rags to Rugs - the old art of creating rugs from old clothes

A true win/win workshop!! this is a great way to recycle your old clothes in a fun and fantastic way, you will learn some basic techniques to make a beautiful piece that can turn into a rug, cushion, doormat or wall hanging from your unwanted items.

Course aim

Learn the techniques for rag rugging, cutting up old clothes or scraps of fabric and knotting them onto a hessian base to create a colourful piece that you can use to continue to make your own rug, doormat or cushion for example at home.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • learn the technique of rag rugging
  • make unwanted clothes and fabric items useful and decorative
  • lay out and cut the fabric
  • consider pattern and design for your rag rug
  • take your item home

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • The techniques and skills gained in this course can be used for further rag rugging projects and to continue to reuse and recycle unwanted items.

Enrolment Conditions

This course is funded by the West of England Combined Authority but is also open to residents of other areas.

As a registered charity, and to meet our funders’ requirements, we need to check a few things with you before you book. Please could we ask that you check the list below to ensure you meet our basic criteria:
