Using established IT skills this course will enable students to develop their ideas into a digital or printed form which supports their life opportunities, their ability to connect with others and network, and a platform to have a voice within their community. Students will be encouraged to find and evaluate material that interests them, identify strengths and inspiration, and reflectively design digital or printed materials that can support and enhance their life and well-being. Students will engage in a range of design and practical IT activities.

Course aim

An opportunity to use established IT skills to design and develop printed and digital material about ourselves or something important to us to increase life opportunities, social connectivity, and a social voice.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify a cause, opportunity or interest that is important to me and I would like to pursue
  • Find materials related to my area of interest and evaluate their strengths and weaknesses from a design perspective, thinking about the idea of “audience”
  • Discuss and collaborate with others sensitively, respectfully and in a way that helps us work together effectively
  • Formulate a design for digital upload or later printing that supports a cause, opportunity or interest which could appeal to a wider audience
  • Identify the risks and considerations when sharing materials and know at least 3 things I can do to help make myself safe mentally, physically and socially.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas will be used to provide resources or to support lessons, enable assessment, provide learner feedback and for other activities for individuals away from the course.   • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will be able to keep a digital portfolio of your work on WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas.
  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
