Supporting your child's transition to secondary school

This taster course will explore the different methods of discipline we use when parenting teens. We will discuss brain development and changes in behaviour as a result of brain development, and changing attitudes and emotions in teenage children. We will discuss emotional changes and what parents can do to manage children's emotional behaviour. We will also explore and discuss how parents can more effectively manage gaming and screen obsessional behaviour and risky behaviour, and implementing behaviour contracts.

Course aim

To promote principles of positive parenting of teens through discussion of: An engaging environment. Encouraging positive learning experiences. Assertive, authoritarian or permissive discipline. Realistic and logical expectations of behaviour.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is for parents of children attending Bearwood Primary school and schools within this school's Academy Group.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Manage anxiety and stress in anticipation of the teen years and secondary school.
  • Support children who will be managing a bigger work-load and more homework.
  • Anticipate behaviour concerns and be able to put strategies in place to monitor behaviour.
  • Prepare for their children's exposure to social media and manage screening and gaming.

How will I be taught?

  • This is an information and discussion session and all materials will be provided.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
